He received his California license to practice law in 1978 and is licensed to trial before U.S. District Court and U.S. Court of Appeals 9th Circuit United States Supreme Court.
He started as Legal Assistance to the Elderly in San Francisco and became staff attorney in 1978. In 1983 he established the professional corporation of Law Office of Steven M. Birnbaum. He specializes in Workers’ Compensation under the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Act and under the California Labor Code and has tried many cases to successful verdicts.
He is a member of San Francisco Bar Association California State Bar California Applicants’ Attorneys Association and a Board Member of Workplace Injury Litigation Group of ATLA. He is also the chair of emeritus of San Francisco Bay Maritime Claimant’s Bar, past Chair of ATLA Workers’ Compensation Section and a Lecturer of National College of Advocacy as well as a member of the advisory board of the Loyola University (New Orleans) Longshore Seminar.
He is the editor of Longshore Textbook 4th Edition and an advisor for Benefits Review Board Reports by LexisNexis Legal Research.
